Dutch initiatives to implement the Sustainable Development Goals
1 junio 2016
The Policy forum on Development, in which PLATFORMA represents the European local and regional government constituency, has launched a series of country studies around the “enabling environment” for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The first one, published in June, is on the Netherlands. This research explores which national multi-stakeholder approaches can support inclusive implementation of the goals.
Half a year after the adoption of the SDGs in September 2015, the first steps are being taken by a wide variety of actors in the Netherlands to strategize and implement the SDGs. Several promising initiatives have been set up in which Civil Society Actors, Local Authorities and/or the umbrella organisations, such as Partos (the Dutch association for Civil Society Actors working in International Development) and VNG international (the International Cooperation Agency of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities), play an important role. These include the Global Goals Charter (a multi-stakeholder initiative which was signed by over 70 organisations), the Dutch Global Goals website (also a multi stakeholder initiative), the Civil Society Actors-initiative Ready for Change (that focuses at coherence and the SDGs), and the global goals municipality campaign (an initiative of VNG International).
The research provides key messages and recommendations for EU institutions, national government and (broad) civil society. Future studies will be on Ghana, Peru, Indonesia.
