VNGI promoting gender equality in Uganda

VNGI (Netherlands) has recently carried out a pilot study within the Uganda Country programme to find out how the programme can become more gender sensitive.
The study includes a mapping of local government gender expertise as well as an overview of tools for gender sensitive project management, policy formulation and implementation. The findings underlined the belief of VNG International that we can better achieve our local government development goals by increasing gender awareness.
The results also serve as a learning opportunity for other country programmes. Issues at hand are: the number of women in senior (decision-making) positions in local governments, the level of knowledge and capacity about gender in local governments, understanding roles and responsibilities of men and women in receiving municipal services (waste collection; access to municipal markets; security…)
