Cities play an essential role in the AIDS response at global level

1 diciembre 2016

Since 2001, the City of Paris has chosen to make the HIV/AIDS response in Africa a major part of its international action. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to highlight these local actions which have global impacts!

In 2016, the City of Paris dedicated €1.8 million to support 28 effective and innovative programmes implemented by French and African associations, civil society stakeholders and NGOs in 21 countries. Every year, the resources allocated by the City of Paris enable around 50,000 victims of the epidemic to benefit from medical care and 500,000 people to get access to prevention, awareness raising and screening activities.
Overall, since 2001, Paris City Council has approved almost €26 million for the global HIV/AIDS response, mostly for sub-Saharan Africa.
“I am convinced that cities play an absolutely essential role in the global HIV/AIDS response at an international level and are able to help speed up containment in order to eradicate HIV once and for all”, explains the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo.

Particular efforts have been made to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, take care of orphans and support family planning schemes aimed at young girls and mothers.
As part of its commitment to international solidarity, the City of Paris will organize in April 2017, with its partners UNAIDS and IAPAC, a seminar of Francophone African cities that are signatories to the Paris Declaration, adopted in 2014.
