Global Gateway through the lense of local and regional governments
We just released a note on how local and regional governements can contribute to Global Gateway, at the occasion of the Forum «Cities and Regions for International Partnerships» on Localising Global Gateway organised by the European Commission DG INTPA and the European Committee of the Regions on 8 and 9 December 2026 in Brussels.
Global Gateway is the EU’s major investment strategy aiming to mobilise €400 billion by 2027 to develop sustainable, secure and high-standard infrastructure and systems in partner countries. It focuses on five priority areas: digital, climate and energy, transport, health, and education & research. Projects are deployed worldwide, including in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America & the Caribbean, the EU Neighbourhood, and the Western Balkans.
Local and regional governments can strengthen the strategy’s local impact, inclusive governance, and policy coherence through:
- Global Gateway Investment Hub: a single-entry platform for investment proposals, primarily aimed at companies but potentially open to public authorities.
- Complementary funding to strengthen local impact: Local and regional governments can also contribute through parallel, synergistic projects that amplify the benefits of larger Global Gateway investments.
