Project 7/12: Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy) – Pemba Municipality (Mozambique)
For the second time, PLATFORMA has decided to reward the best city-to-city and region-to-region international cooperation projects. Twelve projects have been shortlisted out of 26 applications. Every day, we are presenting one new project (sorted by alphabetical order). This is how the Region of Emilia-Romagna in Italy is presenting its «Shaping Fair Cities» partnership with Pemba Municipality in Mozambique.
«The Shaping fair cities project reflects the statement of local and regional government representatives gathered in New York in 2015 to celebrate the adoption of the United Nations Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It recognizes, emphasizes and enhances the role that cities and sub-national governments need to play in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
The project mobilizes Local Authorities in implementing in particular SDG 11 (making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable), SDG 16 (promoting peaceful and inclusive societies), SDG 13 (combat climate change and its impacts), with a strong gender approach (SDG 5) in times of migration and refugee flow, a theme that has been inserted for the first time into mainstream development policy.
Thanks to a pan-European multi-stakeholder partnership (SDG 17), the project raises awareness and actively involves local decision makers, civil servants, grassroots organizations and citizens in localizing the SDGs in 8 European countries and 2 EU partner countries. In doing so, the action promotes the crucial role of local governments in the implementation of a new set of goals, paving the road to specific local 2030 Agenda plans.»
