Upcoming EU-EaP Local Leaders Seminar on Eastern trio
Save the date for the EU-EaP Local Leaders Seminar, Strengthening Local Government Capacities for EU integration in the Eastern trio – Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: 28 November, in Brussels and online.
EU integration has a major impact on local authorities as service providers, employers, regulators, procurers of goods and services, investors, and upholders of standards. There has been growing recognition in recent years of the role they play, not only in complying with but also implementing key aspects of EU legislation and policy, and thus of the importance of involving them in the accession process and preparing them for the opportunities and responsibilities that EU membership entails.
While the Eastern trio countries are not yet eligible for EU pre-accession assistance, the opening of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine, and Georgia’s candidate status, makes EU entry a relevant perspective for EU Neighbourhood and other donors’ support.
The seminar will foster an exchange of experience on how to enhance the capabilities of local governments in the EU integration process. It aims to highlight success stories and lessons learned from candidate countries and recently acceded Member States, and to identify potential entry points for future supportive programming. The seminar is arranged by SALAR International and PLATFORMA, with co-funding from the European Union.
