Online workshop on Solid Waste Management for municipalities hosting refugees

1 février 2017

The Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) is organising an online workshop on Public-Private Procurements (PPPs) and new technologies in Solid Waste Management for Mediterranean and European local governments hosting a high number of refugees.
Municipalities in Syria’s neighbouring countries have seen their waste management capacities challenged by the massive influx of Syrian refugees, which has resulted in population growth and put increased pressure on service delivery for the host community, with a higher risk of social tension. According to a CMI Survey, local authorities have found the Solid Waste Management sector significantly affected by the refugee crisis.
The Host Municipalities Network Webinar – PPPs and new technologies in Solid Waste Management, will take place online on February 9th at 2pm (Brussels time, GMT+1). This virtual seminar is a follow up of the last year workshops held and in Amman (Jordan) in spring and in Bethlehem (Palestine) in October, in particular on:

  • Energy production from waste production (e.g. biogas) and the use of new technologies
  • Small-scale projects with Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) for economic development and job creation
  • Exchange with European experiences
The two-hour webinar (in English and Arabic) will consist of a virtual exchange allowing participants to interact on more efficient waste management solutions, to exchange best experiences and practices with other partners in the Mediterranean region and to explore the potential replication of successful experiences in local governments hosting refugees.
Key speakers:
  • Mr. Anastasios Tzilalis (WATT S.A., Greece), who will present his company’s PPP project in small Greek islands
  • Mr. Fatih Ho?o?lu (?STAÇ A.?. / ?stanbul Metropolitan Municipality), who will showcase Istanbul’s experience in waste management with the use of new technologies
This event is part of the Mediterranean Host Municipalities Learning Network and the CMI refugees and Host communities program. If you are interested to join the online platform (Facebook discussion group), please contact refugees@cmimarseille.org
