Support from Diputació de Barcelona to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
In the last plenary session of Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona Provincial Council), an institutional declaration of support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was read. The Treaty, adopted on 7 July 2017 at the United Nations, prohibits all ratifying nations from developing, producing or manufacturing nuclear weapons and from acquiring, possessing or storing them under any circumstances.
The Barcelona Provincial Council thus joins the campaign launched by the Mayors for Peace Network and Fundipau, « Building peace, within cities and across the world ». This initiative aims to ask cities to approve a motion on nuclear weapons and to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, beside to express their commitment for a world that is fairer, more peaceful and free of nuclear weapons. Once again, it becomes clear that cities play a key role in achieving the world peace and it is necessary the strength of cities to call on states of the world to commit clearly with nuclear disarmament and be able to take concrete steps towards its achievement.
The campaign was presented on February 20 at the Museu d’Història of Barcelona and was attended by Josep Mayoral, mayor of Granollers and president of the Mayors for Peace Network in Catalonia and Europe and representatives of Fundipau,, Centre Delàs and ICAN (International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons), among others. The campaign includes a space on social media where citizens can claim municipalities’ commitment to nuclear disarmament and treaty ratification: #BanNuclearWeapons & #CitiesOfPeace
