No future for Europe without local governments
On 24 March, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, AICCRE is organising a conference on the future of Europe. The two sessions gathering a huge number of EU and local high level representatives are entitled “A new pact between local authorities and the European Union for the revival of democracy and development” and « Building the Europe of citizens and not that of populism: proposals and concerns from European local authorities ».
The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, CEMR President Stefano Bonaccini, but also several Italian ministers will attend the conference, along with EU mayors from PLATFORMA partners including: Anne Hidalgo (Mayor of Paris, France), Annemarie Penn-Te Strake (Mayor of Maastricht, Netherlands, VNG), Carlos Martínez Mínguez (Mayor of Soria, Spain, FEMP), Luc Martens (Municipal Councillor of Roeselare, Belgium, VVSG), Old?ich Vlasák (Councillor of Hradec Kralové, Czech Republic, SMO CR), Petr Kulhánek (Mayor of Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, SMO CR) or Philippe Laurent (Mayor of Sceaux, France, AFCCRE).
The conference will open dialogue between EU and local leaders. It aims to reinforce the connection between the European institutions and local and regional governments, while strengthening the importance of decentralized cooperation and promoting joint activities to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
