Estonian municipalities send power generators to Ukraine
Thanks to donations from Estonian municipalities, the Association of Estonian Cities and Municipalities (AECM) sent 26 power generators to Ukraine. Last year, the association collected voluntary donations from local governments with the aim of supporting the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine with essential products.
« Discussing the issue of Ukraine in the Council of the AECM last year, we jointly agreed that it was necessary to help. We decided that the cities and municipalities can donate according to their capabilities. It was a voluntary decision of the members of the association whether and at which amount they wanted to contribute. In total, we collected nearly €250,000, and with the collected funds, we supported the Zhytomyr region with generators, commented Mihhail Kõlvart, » chairman of the board of AECM.
« By now, it is clear that the war will not end soon, and that Ukrainians will need help also in the future. I’m very grateful to all Estonian local governments who found an opportunity to come along with our idea and financially support our goal, » he added.
The generators will arrive in Estonia in several batches, the first of which went to Ukraine in December. The next batch should arrive in Estonia at the end of May.
The public procurement announced for the purchase of generators was carried out by the Association of Estonian Cities and Municipalities, the organiser of the tender was the Local Government Procurement Center. The association donated the purchased generators to the Estonian Red Cross, and the transport to Ukraine was also organised in cooperation with the Red Cross.
