Global Gateway through the lense of local and regional governments
We just released a note on how local and regional governements can contribute to Global Gateway, at the occasion of the Forum « Cities and Regions for International Partnerships » on Localising Global Gateway organised by the European Commission DG INTPA and the European Committee of the Regions on 8 and 9 December 2026 in Brussels.
Global Gateway is the EU’s major investment strategy aiming to mobilise €400 billion by 2027 to develop sustainable, secure and high-standard infrastructure and systems in partner countries. It focuses on five priority areas: digital, climate and energy, transport, health, and education & research. Projects are deployed worldwide, including in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America & the Caribbean, the EU Neighbourhood, and the Western Balkans.
Local and regional governments can strengthen the strategy’s local impact, inclusive governance, and policy coherence through:
- Global Gateway Investment Hub: a single-entry platform for investment proposals, primarily aimed at companies but potentially open to public authorities.
- Complementary funding to strengthen local impact: Local and regional governments can also contribute through parallel, synergistic projects that amplify the benefits of larger Global Gateway investments.
