27 October 2017

From 17 to 20 October 2017 the city of Praia (Cape Verde), hosted the 4th World Forum on Local Economic Development (World LED Forum). UCLG was participating as organising partner together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ORU-FOGAR, ILO or FAMSI. Around 2000 participants from 120 countries took part in the discussions.

The World Forum on Local Economic Development is a biannual event established as a platform for active exchanges and discussions to achieve more inclusive and sustainable cities and the role-played by local and regional governments to achieve this goal.

This year focused on the contributions of Local Economic Development to the implementation of the 2030 Development Agenda, and especially, highlighted the potential of the local economic development models in implementing SDG8 and SDG17.

The debates were organised around four main thematic areas:

  • Sustainable urbanisation and local economic development: challenges and opportunities for local and regional governments;
  • Informal economy, between regularisation and access in transition phases;
  • The potential of circular economies;
  • LED in fragile and conflict-related settings.

UCLG has covered the event live. Here are they day-by-day “Highlights of local and regional governments in Praia”:
