In the Pacific, increasing urban squatter settlements, rising youth unemployment, poor education, increasing inequality, and the impact of climate change on Pacific communities have worsened the situation faced by many Pacific islanders. Urbanisation is increasing rapidly in the region and In its 2009 assessment of poverty in the region, AusAID found that there was rising poverty in the Pacific island countries, with one-third of people living below national poverty lines meaning they did not have the income or access to subsistence production to meet their basic human needs.
