Mayor of Sceaux, Philippe Laurent, elected new President of AFCCRE

7 July 2017

The mayor of Sceaux, Philippe Laurent is the new President of our French partner AFCCRE.  He was elected at the general assembly of the AFCCRE, on 4 July. His predecessor was the mayor of Bordeaux, Alain Juppé.

In his opening statement that followed a minute’s silence in memory of Simone Veil, Alain Juppé called on local governments to commit to a Europe that is based on the values of “freedom, equality and democracy, a genuine European specificity.”

Philippe Laurent wished to highlight the devotion of Alain Juppé during the course of his mandate, a president who “remained faithful to its fundamental principles and values, and who succeeded in using his strong conviction and experience as a great European statesman for the benefit of the French association. He endeavoured to preserve pluralism, as well as political and territorial balance of power within our association.

As a convinced European in heart and mind, Philippe Laurent restated his personal commitment to fully meet the association’s objectives: to strengthen and to give value to the European project for the benefit of its citizens, to advocate for local and regional autonomy and to support local governments.
