This year, the theme for the World Mayor Prize is migrants and refugees. The winner will be a mayor “whose city has done the most to welcome immigrants and has used their skills to enrich and diversify society culturally, economically and socially.”
Everyone is free to nominate a mayor, whether they are from a big city or a small town, as long as they can explain why they deserve the
World Mayor Prize 2016.
At a time when there are some 60 million refugees worldwide, mayors to be considered for the World Mayor honours will also need to have shown compassion, courage and competence. Compassion for people who have travelled great distances to find safety. Courage to fight prejudice even in the face of unpopularity. Competence to leverage the value and potential each person offers society.
Please find the list of nominees
here. Mirjam van ’t Veld (Amstelveen, Netherlands), Wolfgang G. Müller (Lahr, Germany), Brita Hagi Hasan (Aleppo, Syria), Damien Carême (Grande-Synthe, France) or Pawel Adamowicz (Gdansk, Poland) are already among them.
