PLATFORMA will be at UN-Habitat 1st Assembly meeting in Nairobi

Three local elected representatives will attend the first session of the UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi (27-31 May) on behalf of PLATFORMA and CEMR. The key theme of this meeting, will be “Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”.  The identified Sub theme is: “Accelerated implementation of the New Urban Agenda towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”. 

The delegation attending on behalf of PLATFORMA and CEMR includes:

  • Ullrich Sierau, Mayor of Dortmund (Germany)
  • Felicitas Kubala, Deputy Mayor of Mannheim (Germany)
  • Hints Kukainis, Mayor of Smiltene and Vice-Chairman of LALRG (Latvia)

 

The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (COMSSA) will also be represented by Erias Lukwago, Mayor of Kampala, Uganda.

During the first session, the Assembly is expected to establish the Executive Board of UN-Habitat and elect its members, to review and approve the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2025 and also review the Progress in implementation of New Urban Agenda, among other things. An official interactive dialogue between national governments, local authorities and other partners will take place on 29 May, on the special theme of the Assembly: Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities.

Furthermore, in order for key UN-Habitat stakeholders – including local authorities – to gather their contributions to the UN-Habitat Assembly, a Global Stakeholders Forum will be organised on 25 May 2019.
