R20 and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation will develop 10 environmental projects in ORU regions

1 June 2016

ORU Fogar will sign a collaboration agreement with R20 (Regions of Climate) that will make funds of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) available to 10 ORU Fogar member regions. The agreement is part of the project that R20 and LDF launched last April after the Paris Agreement with the purpose of identifying and financing projects that tackle the issue of climate change.
With this collaboration, financed by LDF with a new grant of $ 650,000, R20 will be able to quickly identify renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste management initiatives that have the potential to bring positive environmental and social benefits to communities across the globe, and ultimately reduce carbon emissions. Within this framework, R20 will develop ten of these projects in collaboration with ORU Fogar in ten of its member regions.
The initiative follows the mission of Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA), launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2014 to encourage investment in low-emission, climate resilient infrastructure in cities, and to close the investment gap in climate friendly projects in urban areas over 15 years.

The three organisations have called for the involvement of governments and organisations the world over in the project. ORU Fogar has launched a call for proposals among its members to submit initiatives that have the potential to receive the funds from the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. All proposals must be related to the following topics: production of renewable energy –solar, wind, micro-hydro, biomass– energy efficiency –LED Street lightning, buildings– and waste management.
