The Committee of the Regions approves our 5 amendments to its “Enlargement package” opinion
Five amendments submitted by PLATFORMA and the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LALRG) to the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) opinion on the enlargement package on Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia were adopted in Plenary session on 17-18 April.
The amendments submited by PLATFORMA and its active partner from Latvia prioritise the reinforcement of country coordination exchanges at all levels among Georgian, Moldovan, and Ukrainian public servants and elected officials. Furthermore, they emphasise the promotion of local democracy and autonomy in the “Eastern trio” countries, based on the European Charter of Local Self-Government.
Additionally, the amendments underscore the pressing need for inclusive policymaking and participatory democracy measures at the local level in Georgia. They also demand additional tools for effective monitoring of the ongoing decentralisation strategy in Georgia. Finally, the amendments stress the necessity of aligning public procurement procedures with EU legislation in the “Eastern Trio” to ensure the effective implementation of EU programs providing funding for different objectives related to local and regional development, by highlighting the skills gap regarding project management at the local level.
The Rapporteur of the Opinion in the Committee of the Regions was Antje Grotheer (PES), president of Bremen City Parliament , Germany.
