Webinar: “Youth. Climate. Local politics. Why and why not?”

9 June 2021

Participate at our international webinar “Youth. Climate. Local politics. Why and why not?” taking place on 15 June at 13.00 – 15.00 (CEST)! Register for the webinar until 14 June.

Youth are not our future. They are here now! Their role is very important: youth are taking actions on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Diverse initiatives include educational, awareness-raising and behavioural change campaigns. Youth are also engaging in different national and international projects devoted to climate change. Young people also have a possibility to participate at local decision-making, that will impact their future, as well as have a key role to play in fostering intergenerational dialogue.

But are young people really the drivers of change? What does the young generation need to be able to fulfil its potential and be a positive transformational force? How can politicians interact with youth both at national and local level? Is the climate crisis the basis of any policy? What do we want, and when do we want it? These are the main questions to be answered during the webinar.

The event will be opened by the European Climate Pact Ambassador, Vice Mayor of Liep?ja city council (Latvia) Mr Gunars Ansinš and the President of the Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania, the Ambassador of the European Covenant of Mayors from Lithuania Mr Mindaugas Sinkevicius. During the webinar, which will be chaired by the Deputy Mayor of Joniškis Municipality (Lithuania) Mrs Vaida Aleknaviciene, Dr. arch. Antra Viluma from Riga Technical University will share with her opinion on how to make our municipalities best by involving young people and implementating activities in the context of the New European Bauhaus initiative. Likewise, Member of the European Parliament from Latvia, Prof. Dr. oec. Inese Vaidere will present her vision on whether the climate policy is now the basis of any policy and what is the role of young people in shaping the policy agenda.

We will also hear stories from Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, Ukraine and Belgium about the involvement of young people in environmental activities and local policymaking. For an epilogue we will offer to watch an art and music video on the theme of nature created by the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments with the participation of children and youth from Latvia, Georgia and Ukraine.

The working languages of the webinar are English, Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian (with simultaneous interpretation). The event is organized by the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LALRG) and Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania (ALAL) in cooperation with the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and PLATFORMA.
