Round table on actions to accelerate gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls
The second expert round table organised by Fons Mallorquí on SDS 5 (Gender Equality) will take place on Friday 30 October in the Church Square of the Town Hall of Calvià.
It is about creating a space where we can debate the main issues associated with a Global Goal, this time, on gender equality, which is one of the main pillars for achieving a peaceful, fair, equitable, prosperous and sustainable world like the one that has been claimed since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda.
Specifically, this round table will highlight the current challenges and opportunities to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, through the gender perspective in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Speakers are: the technical manager of the Equality area of the Calvià City Council, Sandra Sedano, the Lecturer of the Master’s Degree in Policies of Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence of the UIB, Virginia Ferreiro and the Insular Director of Equality of the Consell de Mallorca, Rosa Cursach. The debate will be moderated by Vanesa Corrales, project officer on SDGs at the Mallorcan Fund.
Although there has been a lot of progress in terms of gender in recent decades, such as an increase in countries that have introduced gender parity in educational tuition, a decrease in maternal mortality rate or a greater presence of women in political participation and decision-making, there is still much to do.
In recent years progress has been uneven and has even stagnnated in some areas. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to stop or reverse the achievements of decades of collective effort for gender equality and women’s empowerment. In all areas, from health to the economy, from security to social protection, women and girls are disproportionately affected.
This framework highlights the importance of gender equality to advance all sustainable development goals and their achievements and the Decade of Action to mobilise all actors and citizens to address existing and emerging gaps in achieving gender equality.
The recording of the round table will be available in the coming days.
