2 July 2025

On 7 and 8 July, 2025, the Tunisian city of Kairouan will host the workshop series “Water and equality: towards inclusive local governance in the governance of Kairouan”, with the participation of representatives of local governments, social entities and elected officials from Tunisia, as well as a delegation of four Mallorcan mayors linked to the Les Elegides program, promoted by the Mallorcan Cooperation Fund. The Insular Director of Families of the Consell de Mallorca and the technical team of the Mallorcan Fund will complement the delegation.

The event, organised with the support of PLATFORMA and the European Union, aims to strengthen municipal capacities in water management from a gender perspective. During two working days, local and international experiences will be shared, inequalities in access to water resources will be collectively reflected on and future commitments will be formulated for a more equitable, sustainable and participatory management. The Mallorcan mayoress will provide their testimony on female leadership and public policies with a transformative vision, strengthening the links between the south and north of the Mediterranean in terms of decentralised cooperation.

Moving towards more inclusive and resilient local governance

This event is part of the work strategy in the Mediterranean area of the Mallorcan Cooperation Fund. Since 2016, the Mallorcan Cooperation Fund has maintained a close collaboration with the city of Kairouan and the Local Democracy Agency (ADL). This alliance has contributed to promoting local democracy, citizen participation, women’s rights and sustainability projects, based on strengthening local capacities and respect for the dynamics of the territory.

The joint work has allowed the development of several participatory diagnoses, in water and gender, which have given rise to specific action plans, the creation of South-North links and the positioning of Kairouan as a regional benchmark in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the local level.

The cycle of workshops “Water and equality: towards inclusive local governance in the governance of Kairouan” is part of the continuity of this trajectory, with the support of PLATFORMA and the European Union, and is a new opportunity to exchange knowledge, build alliances and move towards more inclusive and resilient local governance.
