Latvian municipalities are mobilised to localise the SDGs and sign the Charter of European Days of Local Solidarity!
5 June was the closing day of the European Week for Sustainable Development 2019 in Latvia. An exciting discussion on “Gender equality: the road to economic development and inclusive community” was held in the municipality of Salacgriva, organised by the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LALRG). The discussion brought together dozens of participants from local governments, NGOs, as well as entrepreneurs.
The discussion was opened by the Secretary General of the LALRG, Mudite Priede, who gave an insight into the Charter of European Days of Local Solidarity (EDLS). She explained to the audience the relevance of this Charter and motivated municipalities to sign it. One of the goals of the Charter is to inform and mobilize citizens and all local partners on global development issues, especially on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion in Salacgriva was devoted to SDG 5 “Gender equality”.
The workshop focused on need to mainstream gender equality in various policies and activities, as it is a vital precondition for economic development and inclusive community.
The LALRG plans to continue its activities to promote the localisation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to mobilise municipalities to sign the EDLS Charter during the successive workshops that are taking place in various Latvian municipalities in 2019 and 2020.
