PLATFORMA is represented at the Cities Summit in Nairobi
The fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) will take place from 11-15 March 2019, in Nairobi, Kenya. Within this context, a Cities Summit will be hosted on the 13th March by UCLG where PLATFORMA will be respresented by Marie Cugny Seguin, Deputy Mayor of Orléans and member of the Directors’ committee of AFCCRE. She will intervene in the session on “Global Trends and Opportunities for Integrated Urban Systems”.
The Cities Summit has four objectives:
1) To provide an opportunity for high level dialogue between mayors, ministers, private sector leaders and civil society representatives on challenges and innovative solutions to achieve livable, inclusive, and sustainable cities – working across sectors and across all levels of government;
2) As an input to UNEA-4, to identify key messages and success stories on innovation for sustainable consumption and production in cities, with a view to localizing SDGs, creating more integrated urban systems, and implementing ecological transition in the context of the New Urban Agenda;
3) To kick start a process to develop partnerships and commitments to collaborate on a new work area implementing integrated urban infrastructure solutions with an eye to launch and promote it at future global milestone events, such as the International Conference on Climate Action, the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit, COP25, WUF10;
4) To establish the Cities Summit as a key component of UN Environment Assemblies to highlight the importance of localizing the SDGs and allow for engagement with sub-national leaders.
During the Cities Summit, Soham el Wardini, Mayor of Dakar (Senegal), will also speak on behalf of CoM SSA.
The Cities Summit will be followed, also within UNEA4, by One Planet Summit, the Platform of commitments to meet the challenge of climate change launched by the French Government at COP 21 in Paris.
